Romania identifies first H1N1 case in woman from NY

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Romania identified its first case of the new H1N1 flu virus on Wednesday, in a 30-year-old woman who arrived from New York last week, the health minister said.

The new flu strain has already infected some 13,000 people worldwide, including many in Europe. The latest tally from the World Health Organisation showed 80 people killed by the virus in Mexico, the most heavily affected country, and 10 in the United States.

"Romania is officially joining the list of countries with identified H1N1 infection," Health Minister Ion Bazac told reporters.

Bazac said the woman lived in the United States. She was hospitalised with along with three relatives in Bucharest but was in a "good" condition.

Health authorities were searching for people she had come in contact with, including other passengers on her flight from New York.

In 2005, Romania became the first country in Europe to confirm the deadly H5N1 virus strain in birds, which often use the Danube delta for nesting and a stop on their annual migration routes.
