Reducing childhood deaths from diarrhoea
14 OCTOBER 2009 NEW YORK GENEVA --
“It is a tragedy that diarrhoea, which is little more than an inconvenience in the developed world, kills an estimated 1. 5 million children each year,” said UNICEF Executive Director, Ann M. Veneman. "Inexpensive and effective treatments for diarrhoea exist, but in developing countries only 39 per cent of children with diarrhoea receive the recommended treatment.”
The report, Diarrhoea: why children are still dying and what can be done, lays out a seven-point plan that includes a treatment package to reduce childhood diarrhoea deaths and a prevention strategy to ensure long-term results. The seven specific points are:
2. Zinc treatment;
3. Rotavirus and measles vaccinations;
4. Promotion of early and exclusive breastfeeding and vitamin A supplementation;
5. Promotion of hand washing with soap;
6. Improved water supply quantity and quality, including treatment and safe storage of
7. Community-wide sanitation promotion.
Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO, said: "We know where children are dying of diarrhoea. We know what must be done to prevent those deaths. We must work with governments and partners to put this seven-point plan into action."

Study: cell phone users at higher risk of brain tumor
In earlier research, scientists did find a weak link between cell phone and brain tumors, whereas there was no clear indication of what risk the cell phone users were taking.
"We cannot make any definitive conclusions about this," said Dr. Deepa Subramaniam, director of the Brain Tumor Center at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, D.C.
"But this study, in addition to all the previous studies, continues to leave lingering doubt as to the potential for increased risk. So, one more time, after all these years, we don't have a clear-cut answer."
However, Joel Moskowitz, the study's senior author, said that "clearly there is risk." He's director of the Center for Family and Community Health at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health.
"I would not allow children to use a cell phone, or I at least would require them to use a separate headset," Moskowitz said.
"It seems fairly derelict of us as a society or as a planet to just disseminate this technology to the extent that we have without doing a whole lot more research of the potential harms and how to protect against those harms. Clearly, we need to learn a whole lot more about this technology."
Researchers found that using a mobile phone for a decade or longer resulted in an 18 percent increased risk of brain tumor likely to appear on the side where the phone was used, Moskowitz said.
Moskowitz however believed that there's also potential harm to other areas of the body -- the genitals, for example -- when the phone is carried in a pocket.
With so many people worldwide using cell phones, even a small risk could translate into many illnesses and deaths, he stressed.
"We need to do a whole lot more research because the stakes are really high and there seems to be suggestive evidence that you better be careful about this, especially in children, who have developing tissue and smaller brain and skull sizes," Moskowitz warned.
Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration appealed for more research into the risks posed by long-term cell phone use, rather than the more commonly studied short-term risks. It urged that such research focuses on the health of children, pregnant women and fetuses as well

Penyakit Aneh Serang Perempuan Zambia

Militer Korsel : Korut Miliki 13 Jenis Senjata Biologi

Novel H1N1 Influenza and Respiratory Protection for Health Care Workers
Your hospital has been seeing a large number of patients with influenza-like symptoms, many of whom turn out to be infected with the novel H1N1 influenza A virus. You have been asked to consult on the case of a 28-year-old woman who is in an isolation room because of an influenza-like presentation and shortness of breath. You put on a gown, carefully clean your hands with hand soap or an alcoholic gel, pull on gloves, and reach for a mask. Guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend the use of an N95 filtering facepiece respirator. Some states and many professional groups have suggested that a standard surgical mask is satisfactory in this situation, except when a clinician is performing high-risk procedures, such as airway suctioning, in which case the N95 is still recommended. What should the hospital and its infection-control officer provide when you reach into the box for a respiratory protective device? What should be available to others who will enter this room, including nurses, respiratory technicians, cleaners, and food servers?

Indonesia to produce A/H1N1 flu vaccine
The plan comes after the United Nations recently asked major vaccine producer firms in the world, including Indonesia's drug maker Biofarma, to produce the vaccine, Director General of Disease Control and Environmental Health of the ministry Tjandra Yoga Aditama said.
"As the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the world could only produce 3 billion doses of the flu vaccine out of 5 billion doses expectation. So, we will produce the vaccine," Yoga told Xinhua at his office when asked whether Indonesia will produce the A/H1N1 flu vaccine.
But, it had not been determined yet the amount of the vaccines to be produced by Biofarma and whether Indonesia would join other countries move to donate the vaccine to under developed countries, he said, adding "Let's wait until two months after the preparation process is completed, then all will be clear, such as the amount of the vaccine to be produced, whether they are only for us or to be given to other countries."

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 - update 66
Weekly update
In the temperate regions* of the northern hemisphere, influenza activity remains widely variable. In North America, the United States is reporting increases in influenza-like-illness activity above the seasonal baseline, most notably in the southern, southeastern, and parts of the northeastern United States.
In Canada, influenza activity remains low. In Europe and Central Asia influenza activity remains low overall, except in France, which is reporting increases in influenza-like-illness activity (for week 37) above the seasonal epidemic threshold. Geographically localized influenza activity is being reported in several countries (Austria, Georgia, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, and Israel). In Japan, influenza activity remains stably increased above the seasonal epidemic threshold with the most notable increases being reported on the southern island of Okinawa.
In the tropical regions of the Americas and Asia, influenza transmission remains active. Geographically regional to widespread influenza activity continues to be reported throughout much of South and Southeast Asia, with increasing trends in respiratory diseases being reported in India and Bangladesh. Geographically regional to widespread influenza activity continues to be reported for the tropical regions of Central and South America without a consistent pattern in the trend of respiratory diseases (continued increases are being reported in Bolivia and Venezuela).
In the temperate regions* of the southern hemisphere, influenza activity continues to decrease or has returned to the seasonal baseline in most countries. In Australia, later affected areas are also now reporting declining levels of influenza-like-illness. In South Africa, influenza activity appears to have recently passed over the second peak (the first peak was due to seasonal influenza A (H3N2) and second peak was due to pandemic (H1N1) 2009).
WHO Collaborating Centres and other laboratories continue to report sporadic isolates of oseltamivir resistant influenza virus. Twenty six such virus isolates have now been described from around the world, all of which carry the same H275Y mutation that confers resistance to the antiviral oseltamivir but not to the antiviral zanamivir. Of these, 12 have been associated with post-exposure prophylaxis, five with long term oseltamivir treatment in patients with immunosuppression. Worldwide, over 10,000 clinical samples and isolates of the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus have been tested and found to be sensitive to oseltamivir. WHO will continue to monitor the situation closely in collaboration with its partners.
Pandemic (H1N1) influenza virus continues to be the predominant circulating influenza virus, both in the northern and southern hemisphere. See below for detailed laboratory surveillance update.
*Countries in temperate regions are defined as those north of the Tropic of Cancer or south of the Tropic of Capricorn, while countries in tropical regions are defined as those between these two latitudes.

Wabah Kolera Hajar Afghanistan

At least 2,837 die from H1N1 flu: WHO
Of all the deaths, 2,234 occurred in the Americas, followed by the West Pacific region, with 279 deaths. The other four WHO regional offices, South-East Asia, Europe, East Mediterranean and Africa reported 188, 104, 21 and 11 deaths respectively.
The WHO's recorded number of lab confirmed A/H1N1 cases worldwide is more than 254,206, but it actually understates the real number of cases as countries are no longer required to test and report individual cases, the U.N. agency said.
The A/H1N1 virus continues to be the predominant circulating virus of influenza, both in the northern and southern hemisphere, but there are still no signs that the virus has mutated into a more virulent or lethal form, the agency said.
Although the virus can cause severe and fatal illness, also in young and healthy people, the number of such cases remains small, the WHO has said.
