A (H1N1) flu: M’sia reports 3 more cases

PUTRAJAYA: Three more new cases of influenza A (H1N1) have been confirmed in Malaysia, making the total number of patients infected with the disease to five since May 15.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the first new case was a Malaysian student, 23, who travelled home from the United State on MAS flight MH091 for holiday.

“The student did not have fever when he arrived at the KL International Airport on Monday (June 1) but started to have the symptom and cough on Wednesday (June 3),” he told a press conference here Thursday.

He said the student was admitted at the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital in Seremban on Wednesday for treatment and investigation.

“He was confirmed to have contracted the disease at 4am Thursday through laboratory test carried out by the Malaysia Medical Research Institute,” he said.

He said the student, who had been given anti-viral treatment, was in stable condition.

Liow said the other two patients were two Germans tourists, who first arrived in Singapore on Monday (June 1) for their holiday in Asia countries.

“They arrived at the LCCT on AirAsia flight AK702 on Wednesday (June 3) at 1.55pm,” he said.

He said the two patients, aged 30 and 32, started having fever in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (June 3).

“They received treatment at the Gleneagles Hospital, Kuala Lumpur and were transferred to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for further treatment and investigation at 1.40am on the same day,” he said.

He said the two patients, who were friends, were confirmed with the disease at 3pm Thursday through laboratory test by the Malaysia Medical Research Institute.

“They are in stable condition and anti-viral treatment will start now,” he said.

Liow said the ministry was tracking those who came into contact with the two German patients, including crew members and passengers on board AK702, to prevent local transmission of the virus.

“We ask for their cooperation with the ministry by contacting us at 03-8881 0200 or 03-8881 0300 so that we can give them health advice, including the need of home quarantine,” he said.

However, Liow could not give details of how many crew members and passengers from AK702 were involved.

“We are still getting the information,” he said.

He advised members of the public to practise cough etiquette by covering their mouth and washing their hands with soap and water after coughing and sneezing.

“Those who are coughing and having flu are advised to uses ‘three-ply’ mask to prevent infection,” he said.

He also urged those who were having fever, cough and flu not to travel overseas to reduce respiratory infection.

Saudi Arabia confirms first H1N1 flu case

Wed Jun 3, 2009 5:24am EDT

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has confirmed its first case of the H1N1 flu virus in a Filipina nurse, the kingdom's health minister said on Wednesday.

The woman arrived on Friday on board a Gulf Air flight from the Philippines and showed first symptoms on Monday, Abdullah al-Rabeeah told Saudi news channel al-Ekhbariya, adding that she was being held in quarantine in a hospital in the capital Riyadh.

"She wasn't showing any symptoms then when she came back ... She started showing some symptoms on Monday," he said.

"Preliminary tests turned positive last night," he said, adding that more tests had confirmed the results on Wednesday.

Saudi authorities are tracking down people who had contact with her on the flight and in the hospital, he said.

Gulf Air flights usually operate through their Manama hub in Bahrain.

Saudi Arabia's neighbor Kuwait said on May 24 that 18 U.S. soldiers had H1N1 flu in the first cases to hit the world's largest oil exporting region. Kuwait is a logistics base for the U.S. army for their Iraq operations.

SINGAPORE: Singapore has confirmed its ninth Influenza A(H1N1) case.

The patient is a 19-year-old Singaporean studying in the United States, who returned for the summer holidays.

She arrived in Singapore from New York via Tokyo on All Nippon Airways NH901 at 11:40pm local time on May 28.

She developed symptoms on Monday morning (June 1), and a 993 ambulance was called to send her to the Communicable Disease Centre (CDC) at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

She was admitted to the CDC on the afternoon of the same day.

Laboratory results confirmed her infection at 9pm on Tuesday.

Singapore's Health Ministry (MOH) has assessed that no flight passengers needed to be quarantined as the case only developed onset of symptoms more than 24 hours after disembarkation, hence she was assessed to be non-infectious during the flight.

MOH added on Wednesday that tracing for the local contacts has been initiated.

So far, two close contacts involving the case's family members have been identified.

They are currently well and home quarantine orders will be served to them.

Tracing for other local contacts is on-going.

The Ministry said that so far, all the nine cases are imported and have a travel history.

There is currently no evidence of community spread.

MOH said it is monitoring the situation closely and will update the public on any new developments.

For more information on Influenza A(H1N1), please access MOH's website at www.moh.gov.sg, call the hotline at 1800-333 9999, or visit www.flu.gov.sg.

Three more imported cases of human swine influenza

Hongkong, 30 May 2009

A spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) today (May 30) said that the department was investigating three newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1).

This brings to 23 the total number of human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong. All of them are imported cases.

The first case involved a 21-year-old man. He stayed in the United States from May 15 to 27 and returned to Hong Kong on May 28 from New York by taking a flight of Continental Airlines (flight no. CO009). He wore a face mask during the flight and sat in row 23.

The patient took Airport Express to Tsing Yi where he took a taxi to his home in Cheung Hang Estate, Kwai Tsing.

He had onset of headache in the middle of the flight and developed fever and sore throat after arriving home. He stayed at home during that night.

He consulted a private doctor in the morning of May 29. The doctor referred him to Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) by ambulance.

His family members are asymptomatic.

The second case involved an eight-year-old boy living in the United States. The boy, accompanied with three family members, arrived in Hong Kong on May 30 from San Francisco by taking a flight of Singapore Airlines (flight no. SQ1).

The boy developed fever, cough, runny nose and malaise during the flight. He sat in row 39 of the flight.

He was intercepted by Port Health Office and was transferred to PMH by ambulance for isolation.

His mother stayed with him in Hong Kong while his father and sister had gone to the Mainland this morning. They were asymptomatic.

The third case involve a 19-year-old woman studying in the United States. She returned to Hong Kong from New York in the evening of May 28.

She and her mother took an airport bus to Wan Tsui Estate in Eastern District.

On May 29, she went to China Travel Agency in Shau Kei Wan and to Immigration Department in Wan Chai to apply for some documents.

She had onset of fever, cough and sore throat in the afternoon. Her mother took her to the Accident and Emergency Department of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital by minibus and was admitted for isolation. She wore a face mask on the journey.

Her family contacts are asymptomatic.

As she had onset of symptoms more than 12 hours after he arrived Hong Kong, CHP would not trace the flight passengers.

Laboratory analysis on respiratory sample taken from the three patients yielded positive results for human swine influenza today.

DH is now tracing passengers sitting in rows 20-26 of CO099 arrived in Hong Kong on May 28 and those sitting in rows 36-42 of SQ1 arrived in Hong Kong on May 30, and crew members of the flights concerned who had served the affected section of the cabin concerned as well as other close contact of the three patients.

Passengers who had travelled on the two concerned flights are urged to call the DH¡¦s Centre for Health Protection hotline 2125 1111.

The spokesman also urged the taxi driver who took the 21-year-old male patient from Tsing Yi to Cheung Hang Estate on May 28 to call the hotline.

Investigations into the three cases are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the spokesman called on members of the public to advise their children, relatives or friends coming to Hong Kong from abroad to defer their trips if they developed symptoms such as fever, cough or sore throat.

"To protect their own health and that of other travellers, they should seek medical attention where they are.

"If they feel unwell on the plane, they should wear a face mask and inform cabin crew immediately," the spokesman said.
